Tension in The Red Room, The Cone and The superstitious Mans Story The Red Room, The Cone and The irrational Mans Story atomic number 18 allshort stories which were written before 1914. The Red Room and TheCone were both written by H.G. come up and The Superstitious MansStory was written by Thomas Hardy. All leash of these stories werewritten in Victorian Times (1837-1901). These were years of greatscientific and technological developments. The authors of the trinestories show us a diminishing belief in fanaticism and supernatural. The authors of The Red Room and The Superstitious Mans Story havewritten the stories in the style of a gothic one, although they dontend up being supernatural. However, The Cone has been written withno gothic features, but it shows technological development as the name itself contains the word Cone which is part of industrialterminology. Also, the setting is industrial and shows thedevelopment. The Red Room is near a adult male who goes to a house and in particular aroom which is seen to have ghosts in it and, on that pointfore, no one goes inthat room. However, this hu piece of music being goes in to prove there is no existence ofa ghost. We vex away that no ghost is present in the room and therenever has been and its just that fear has overcome the person. The Cone is about a man and woman who are having an affair. Tensionis created as the man and woman who are having an affair are not surewhether the womans husband has found out about what is going on. Atthe end the womans husband kills the other man and then afterthrowing him off a bridge on go across of the hot, melting iron at thebottom, he realises he has done something rottenly wrong. In contrastThe Superstit... ...nd creates more tension, whereas if it was daytime peoplewouldnt be as scared, although it may influence the readers ascreating tension. Feelings of eccentrics creates tension in allstories, as it puts us in the place of the character and thedescript ion makes us feel, how the character is feeling. This createstension and as well as maintains it, as we dont know what provide happen next.Imagery such as metaphors, similes and personification maintains thetension during the stories. It makes us create a flamboyant picture,of what is going on. Sentence structure also gives us a sense oftension as the build up of sentences tells us an important part iscoming up, which creates anticipation for the readers. The work of H.G. Wells and Thomas Hardy has been successful and theway in which all three pre 1914 stories create tension and the way itis maintained.
